Average Normal Body Temperature
The commonly accepted normal body temperature is 98.6°F (37°C). However, it can range between:
- 97°F to 99°F (36.1°C to 37.2°C) for most healthy adults.
Temperature Can Vary Based On
- Time of day: Lower in the morning, slightly higher in the late afternoon or evening
- Age: Older adults may have slightly lower temperatures
- Activity: Physical exertion or exercise can temporarily raise temperature
- Menstrual cycle: Women’s body temperature may rise during ovulation
- Measurement method:
- Oral: 97.6°F to 99.6°F (36.5°C to 37.5°C)
- Rectal: 98.6°F to 100.4°F (37°C to 38°C)
- Armpit (Axillary): 96.6°F to 98.6°F (35.9°C to 37°C)
- Forehead (Temporal): Similar to oral or slightly lower
Fever
A temperature above 100.4°F (38°C) usually indicates a fever and may suggest an infection or illness.
Low Body Temperature (Hypothermia)
A reading below 95°F (35°C) is considered abnormally low and may be dangerous if not addressed.
When to See a Doctor
- Persistent high fever
- Fever with chills, rash, or confusion
- Low body temperature that causes shivering, weakness, or drowsiness
