Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the lungs. It can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-lasting). The most common cause is a viral infection, though it can also be triggered by bacteria, smoking, or air pollutants.
Common Symptoms of Bronchitis
1. Persistent Cough
- Main symptom, often producing mucus (clear, white, yellow, or green)
- Can last for several days to weeks
2. Chest Discomfort
- A feeling of tightness or mild pain in the chest
- Worsens with deep breathing or coughing
3. Fatigue
- Feeling unusually tired or weak due to constant coughing and inflammation
4. Shortness of Breath
- Especially during physical activity
- More common in people with chronic bronchitis or underlying lung disease
5. Mild Fever and Chills
- Usually present in acute bronchitis caused by viral infections
6. Wheezing
- Whistling or rattling sound when breathing due to narrowed airways
Chronic Bronchitis Symptoms
- Daily cough with mucus lasting for at least 3 months, and recurring for two or more years
- Common in smokers or those exposed to lung irritants
- Often a part of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
When to See a Doctor
- Cough lasting more than 3 weeks
- High fever
- Coughing up blood
- Wheezing or trouble breathing
- If you have underlying conditions like asthma or COPD
