A heart attack (also called myocardial infarction) happens when blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked, usually by a clot. This can damage the heart muscle and requires immediate medical attention.
Common Symptoms of a Heart Attack
1. Chest Pain or Discomfort
A feeling of pressure, tightness, squeezing, or pain in the center or left side of the chest. It may last for a few minutes or come and go.
2. Pain in Other Areas of the Upper Body
Pain or discomfort may spread to the arms (especially the left arm), back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
3. Shortness of Breath
May occur with or without chest pain. It can happen while resting or during physical activity.
4. Nausea or Vomiting
Some people feel sick to their stomach during a heart attack.
5. Cold Sweat
Sudden sweating for no obvious reason is a warning sign.
6. Lightheadedness or Dizziness
You may feel faint or unsteady, sometimes even collapse.
7. Fatigue
Unusual tiredness, especially in women, may occur days or weeks before a heart attack.
8. Indigestion or Heartburn-like Feeling
Sometimes mistaken for digestive issues, especially in older adults.
Heart Attack Symptoms in Women
Women may have less obvious symptoms, such as:
- Jaw, neck, or upper back pain
- Unusual fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea or vomiting
- Lightheadedness
